Cardiac Evaluations

At Expert Medical Care, we assess the athlete’s cardiovascular system by performing a detailed history and physical examination. Athletes have specific cardiac demands and will have physiological adaptions from intense physical training. Congenital cardiac abnormalities are diagnosed and recommendations for sports participation are made for the athlete. In young athletes (less than 35 year of age) the most common cardiac abnormalities that predispose to sudden death are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (40%), coronary anomalies (20%), Idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy (10%), myocarditis (5%), Marfan Syndrome (2%), congenital valvular disorders, anomalous coronary arteries, right ventricular dysplasia, and electrical conduction disorders such as prolonged QT Syndrome. Athletes that have risk factors in the history or abnormalities on physical examination require a comprehensive work up that includes listening to the heart with valsalva maneuver, assume a standing from a squatting position, ECG, two-dimensional echocardiography, chest x-ray, stress testing and MRI imaging of the heart prior to being cleared for full competition.

Assessments at the center include:

  • Resting EKG

  • Sub- Maximal Stress Testing- American College of SportsMedicine Guidelines

  • Echocardiography

  • Cardiovascular Laboratory Testing

  • Chest X-Ray

  • American College of Sports Medicine- Risk Stratification for Cardiovascular Disease
